Humming Breathwork
A hum is a long exhale you do not have to concentrate on. That is most of the trick.
Humming breathwork is gentle voiced humming on the out-breath. It naturally lengthens the exhale, produces vibration through the throat, face and chest, and gives attention something to rest on. It appears at Level 4 of the Overwhelmed module and is closely related to the yogic practice of bhramari.
What it is
You hum on the way out. That is the whole practice. The pitch does not matter and neither does whether you can sing.
What makes it more than a curiosity is that humming does several useful things at once without requiring you to manage any of them. The exhale gets longer automatically, because a hum cannot be rushed. The vibration gives you a strong, non-threatening sensory anchor. And the sound occupies enough attention that rumination has less room to run.
What it is doing in your nervous system
Start with the part that is well established. A voiced exhale is a slow exhale. Slow exhalation increases vagal influence on the heart and is the most reliably supported route from breathing to a calmer physiological state. Whatever else humming does, it does this.
The vibration is the second layer. Humming produces mechanical vibration in the vocal folds, pharynx and sinuses. The vagus nerve has sensory branches supplying part of the larynx and pharynx, and the plausible — though not conclusively demonstrated — claim is that this vibration provides direct vagal afferent stimulation. Treat this as a reasonable mechanism rather than a proven one.
There is one specific, well-replicated finding worth knowing: humming increases nasal nitric oxide output dramatically compared with quiet exhalation, by roughly fifteen-fold in the original measurements. Nitric oxide in the airway has real physiological roles. What this does not yet show is that the effect meaningfully changes mood or stress — that step has been repeatedly overstated online, and I would rather you heard it accurately here.
Trials of bhramari report reductions in blood pressure and heart rate, but they are mostly small and methodologically limited. The honest summary: the long exhale is doing the reliable work, the vibration is a plausible bonus, and the sensory anchoring is genuinely useful in a way that is hard to measure.
When to use it
- When your mind is loud and a silent practice will not hold your attention
- When breath counting makes you more anxious rather than less
- When you have privacy and can afford to make a noise
- In the evening, to wind down without needing to concentrate
- When a tight throat or jaw is part of how stress shows up for you
- After speaking or presenting for a long stretch
When it is not the right practice
Not usable where you cannot make sound, which rules out a lot of the moments people need help most. Ease off with an acute throat infection, laryngitis, or if you use your voice professionally and it is already tired. If humming triggers coughing or lightheadedness, shorten it — you are probably pushing the exhale past comfortable.

Frequently asked questions
Does humming stimulate the vagus nerve?
Partly, and less directly than most sources claim. The lengthened exhale increases vagal influence on the heart, which is well established. Vibration reaching vagal sensory branches in the throat is plausible but not proven. Both are reasons to hum; neither justifies the stronger claims made online.
What is bhramari breathing?
A yogic practice — the name means "bee breath" — that uses a humming exhale, sometimes with the ears closed. Humming breathwork in Soma Circuit is the same core action, taught without the ritual elements.
How long should I hum for?
The guided practice runs about four and a half minutes. Even thirty seconds does something. Stop if you feel lightheaded, which usually means you are emptying the lungs too far.
